Next Tomb Raider Called “Underworld”
Eidos Interactive has recently reserved the trademark Tomb Raider: Underworld, raising the rumor that it could be the title of the next installment in the popular Tomb Raider series.
According to reports, the title is said to feature heavily on the Mayan Calendar, focusing five days where the line between the mortal realm and the ‘Underworld’ realm becomes blurred, hence the game’s title.
Further details are unknown, although it was previously stated that a new title in the franchise would be available for major consoles some time in 2008.
According to Trademork, Eidos Interactive filed an application on a trademark for the phrase “Tomb Raider Underworld” last week. The trademark covers both discs and digital distribution. What are we to draw from this? “Underworld” could be the title for the anticipated Tomb Raider: Legend sequel, currently being developed by the studio Crystal Dynamics.
The rumor is that the latest Tomb Raider installment’s storyline is based on the Mayan Calendar, whose contents are believed tell the date on which the world will end. Sounds interesting.
With Tomb Raider: Anniversary out of the way, it’s time to move on to future projects. Eidos Interactive has already confirmed that a sequel to the redeeming iteration in the series, Tomb Raider: Legend, is in the pipeline, and if a recent trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office is anything to go by, Lara Croft is believed to reprise her role as a voluptuous treasure hunter in a Tomb Raider game titled Underworld.
Apart from securing the trademark for games distributed either on game discs or digitally, the move gives away no further information on the next installment in the series. However, rumour has it the sequel will take place in 2012 which is the year that marks the end of the world in the Maya calendar. Since the previous iterations in the saga revolved around similar save-the-world events, the rumoured setting for Underworld seems quite plausible in our book.
We’ll have more on Tomb Raider Underworld as it becomes available.
